Property Tax Relief Credit (RI-1040H)
- Who
- Age 65 or older and/or disabled. You lived in Rhode Island all of 2025, had household income of $40,730 or less, and lived in a taxed household. You must be current on homestead property tax and rent for prior years and on current installments. One claim per household.
- What you get
- Up to $700 for tax year 2025. The credit is the amount your property tax (or rent counted as property tax) is above 3%, 4%, 5% or 6% of your household income, depending on income and household size. Tax or rent paid with public assistance does not count.
- How to apply
- File Form RI-1040H with your income tax return, or by itself if you don't need to file a return.
- Deadline
- April 15, 2026 for tax year 2025. That date has passed. An extension for your income tax return does not extend this form.
- After that
- File every year.
RI-1040H: the form
Flat charges and parcel taxes. Fire districts in some towns and sewer charges are often billed separately. Only the district that sets a charge can remove it, and only if it adopted an exemption you qualify for.
Think your value is too high?
Asking for a lower assessed value
- Formal appeal
- Start with your local tax assessor, then the local board of assessment review, then Superior Court.
- Good to know
- Appeal deadlines, fees and whether the value can go up were not confirmed. Ask your assessor right away and keep paying your bill while you wait.
A formal appeal reopens your whole value: the board can raise it as well as lower it. Bring recent sales of similar homes.

What can't come off
Charges you can't remove
- Another town's exemption
- Rent or tax paid with public assistance, on RI-1040H
- Any relief credit above $700 for tax year 2025
- Fire district and sewer charges, unless that district adopted an exemption you qualify for
Fire districts in some towns bill separately, and sewer charges are often separate. Tangible personal property tax is a different bill. Motor vehicle tax is not part of the real estate bill. Homestead treatment is a local exemption or a lower owner-occupied rate, and it does not cross town lines.
